The Visual Construction of the Rock in Rio 2024 Map:

Rock in Rio will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2024, and with that comes the need to create a unique and memorable experience, not only on stage, but in every detail of the event. As the artist responsible for the official map for this edition, I was challenged by the festival's creative team to develop a work that would not only guide the audience, but also involve a visual play of light, shadow and colors.

The briefing, presented by the creative department of Rock in Rio called for a balance between playfulness and realism. The vision was clear: the map should transport the audience into the event, creating a visual relationship that played with special lighting effects, shadow ambiance and an immersive color composition. At the same time, realism was essential to ensure that the audience could easily find their way around the festival's physical space.

Before and After (3D Process)
This dichotomy between the playful and the realistic was undoubtedly one of the biggest challenges faced during the construction of the map. The proposal involved creating a visual environment that brought the stage lights and the magic of the event to life, while maintaining the clarity necessary for the audience to navigate the attractions without losing functionality. The colors were carefully selected to evoke the vibrant energy of the festival, while the shadows and lighting effects helped to build an immersive atmosphere that reflected the spirit of the Rock in Rio.
The Creative Process: From the First Steps to the Final Result
The creation of the visual map went through several stages that I will share with detailed images throughout the project. Each step was carefully planned and executed in conjunction with the creative team. The use of 3D technology was essential to ensure that the spherical representation of the map was perfectly adapted to the two-dimensional format, without losing its visual depth and clarity. The process began with the development of a 3D model that allowed for a three-dimensional view of the festival space. This facilitated the creation of volumes and positioning of the attractions, ensuring that everything was clearly identified and intuitively located. From there, I began working on the volume, texture, lighting and shadow passes, elements that will be demonstrated in the images that accompany this article. Each of these steps helped to build the realistic and immersive atmosphere that defines the final map. Another highlight was the before and after comparison of the production phases, which will also be presented visually. These comparisons show the evolution of the map from its initial sketches to the final version, revealing how small adjustments in lighting and color made all the difference in building the final visual.
The Final Result and Its Repercussion
The end result is a map that not only fulfills its functional role, but also stands out as a stand-alone visual piece. The sphericity adapted to a two-dimensional plane ensures that the public can clearly locate themselves, even amidst the wealth of visual details. With the images and stages of the process, it will be possible to observe how each technical decision – from the texture to the effects of light and shadow – contributed to the final result. After its completion, the map was widely publicized in the media, gaining space in the media and vehicles linked to Rock in Rio. The repercussion was extremely positive, with the public highlighting the clarity and visual impact of the map, which was distributed both digitally and physically at the event.
Acknowledgements

This project was possible thanks to the trust and collaboration of many people. A special thanks to the client Rock in Rio, represented by Marisa Peixoto – Thank you for your trust! – and to the incredible team that has been with me throughout this journey: Lucas Farizatto and DuhArts. Together, we were able to turn a vision into reality and deliver something that goes beyond functionality, creating an unforgettable visual experience for all festival-goers. Creating this map was a rewarding experience, and I look forward to sharing more visual and technical details of this project in upcoming presentations. This collaboration with Rock in Rio It provided me with a unique opportunity to connect art with functionality, bringing a special touch to an event that is already part of music history.
